BIG STORY
34 MALAYSIA The Malaysian Armada
The creation of a new Federal Government Administrative Centre away from the country’s existing capital Kuala Lumpur marks a new chapter in the development history of modern Malaysia. Spread over an area of 4,931 hectares, 25 kilometres south of the old capital Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya is masterplanned based on the ‘Garden City’ typology where a major proportion of land area (approximately 1,826.5 hectares or 37.0 percent) is dedicated for green and open spaces within the city. Additional features include a large water body (man-made lake) formed by utilising the small natural streams which run through the area, a 38-kilometre long waterfront area formed with the creation of the lake, and 4.2-kilometre-long boulevard that forms the central spine of the city.
Studio Nicoletti Associati (Rome) and Hijjas Kasturi Sdn’s (Kuala Lumpur) competition-winning design for the Putrajaya Precinct 4 Waterfront Residential Development attempts to add soul to the development while creating a ‘must visit’ destination through iconic yet sustainable architecture. Inspired by a fleet of traditional sailing vessels, the eight sail like buildings will be light and transparent, elegant and strong. The image of the eight boats with their sails spread full with wind on the edge between land and water on the Precinct 4 waterfront is truly striking.
